Life
The Weaver line wasn’t running for most of the week because of a line-side fire last Sunday. This pushed the commute up to c. 2.5h each way, and stretched everyone’s patience to a hair’s breadth shy of breaking point. At no point over the last 10 weeks have we found any desirable characteristics associated with a life in Higham’s Park. I guess it’s good to have our life choices vindicated, but we’ve been at 100% vindication for a long time now.
England getting knocked out of the World Cup was a disappointment, and breaking the news to Ηη the next morning was reasonably tough. He took it far better than he did when Arsenal lost the champions league final, and he’s going to have to get used to being knocked out deep in the rounds if he’s going to be an England fan.
I got gifted an old school Arsenal jersey and a nice running cap from my fam for my birthday. I’m delighted. My only concern is that strangers are going to try and talk to me about football (something which happened once before when I was holding Ηη’s Gunnersaurus scarf for him) and obviously I’m woefully unprepared for any such interaction.
Ηη finished year 1 on Friday. I remember how crazed he and his classmates were the same time last year and it’s wild how far they’ve come. Obviously I’d stop well clear of saying Ηη was calm, but he’s become a lot more predictable over the course of the year and he’s mostly a joy to hang out with. Αα is still broadly sweetness and light but has a capacity to go so full-bore mental and it’s mildly terrifying. Every time I think well now she absolutely must’ve peaked she’ll surprise us.
I’ve never felt (or indeed been) so broke. Even at my previous lowest ebb when I was signing on I always knew there was a bit of a safety net. Now we’ve spent all the money we had (and much more we didn’t have) on doing up the flat and I’m having to beg pocket money from Σσ to tide me over till payday. It’s a distinctly unpleasant feeling.
Σσ took the kids up to Bev on Saturday. I stayed back to keep the cat fed. Si and Lou took pity on me and bankrolled drinks and Chinese in King’s Cross, after a cursory glance at the illustrators fair. Lovely to hang out with them in the sun, as ever.
I think I’d have been more enthusiastic about some time on my own if I were currently able to run. But I’m not hugely enthused by the prospect of being penniless and alone in Higham’s Park – feels like an obvious precursor to being quite depressed.
I was glad Spain won the world cup (and I don’t think it was just sour grapes about Argentina vs England). It wasn’t a particularly enjoyable watch though.
