Life

We took the train up to Bev after school on Friday. Four hours’ travel would historically have been incredibly stressful with the kids (maybe even more so just with Ηη alone) but they’ve grown up so much it was bordering on pleasant.

Σσ and Em were concerned that the state of the garden would have annoyed Ange when she saw it (they came down from Scotland on the Saturday) and pressed me into lawn-mowing service. This was interpreted (perhaps correctly) as a passive aggressive act, and set off quite a vitriolic row between Em, Kika, and Karl. The upshot was we didn’t see K&K for much of the rest of the weekend, but I think enough things were said (shouted) that there’s going to be no skirting round it in future. They’re going to have to confront some of the stuff that’s been bubbling away for a long time. Hopefully this can ultimately be a good thing. Fortunately the kids didn’t see their aunties going at it.

I’m still a bit rudderless in the wake of the marathon but not long now till the renovation starts, which will keep us all equivalently stressed.

Listened to a lot of Three Bean Salad which (after an initial teething period where I felt I might hate it) is among the funniest things I’ve encountered. Raw silliness.

Watched Arsenal get a goal against them overturned by VAR deep into extra time. Absolute scenes! It’s looking like they really should win the league from this point but my recent learning indicates that they have the capacity for hitherto unimaginable levels of bottling so it’s not done till it’s totally done.

Running

We were in Bev ostensibly to run the Beverly 10k and I once again paced Σσ around the course trying to use just the right balance of carrot and stick to get her a sub-50 time. I might have resorted to hitting her gently with the carrot by the end, but she got there. I remembered with a fondness that it was this race last year that gave me the clear thought I was going to enter a marathon and aim for sub-3.
